Harpenden Street Dance
More and more young people are enjoying Street Dance and Harpenden holds Street Dance classes for children aged from 7 to 15 on Fridays in Harpenden. The classes are run by The Hurst Children’s Theatre Group (HCTG).
All Street Dance classes have Grace as their teacher. The 50-minute sessions include a warm-up, warm down and work towards big routines to be performed (in front of hundreds) in a local Theatre! The Harpenden classes are held at the United Reformed Church, Vaughan Rd, Harpenden the Friday ‘mint’ Street Dance class timings look like this - Class A (7-9 yr olds) 6.10-7 pm - Class B (9-15 yr olds) 7-7.50pm.
HCTG is well known in Harpenden it is run by Jonas Hurst. The Hurst Children’s Theatre Group was established over 65 years ago in London by his Grandmother. It has always been a family-run group which is what makes it different. His father, Mike Hurst also took the Theatre Group to Henley where it still flourishes today. Each of his 3 sisters runs their own versions of HCTG in Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Oxfordshire. Jonas’s classes are run in Harpenden, St Albans and Berkhamsted.
It must be said that HCTG is popular and many of the classes are quickly fully booked but they do operate a waiting list. At the end of each term, they ask all current members if they’ll be returning for another term. If they are they will get priority but places do come up and they are filled via the waiting list. If you’re on the list, you’ll hear near the start of each term.
The emphasis for Harpenden Street Dance is very much on having fun and enjoying themselves through dance. The sessions are not a super-serious tightly structured/formal lesson and there are no exams. Anyone can do it and the Harpenden kids love it!!
