Making your home more energy efficient

With the current cost-of-living crisis and ongoing climate concerns, having an energy efficient home is a big priority for buyers.    

Here’s a list of things you can do to make your home more green, from small jobs to big projects.

Energy saving light bulbs

This is a small way to make a big difference in your home. They last significantly longer than traditional bulbs on top of saving more energy. Remember to replace the less obvious lights as well, like any outdoor lights or the ones in your oven. 

Check your radiators

Over time air will become trapped in your radiators, which means they don’t heat up properly and waste your energy. You can easily test this by feeling the radiator while your heating is on; if it’s cold at the top but warm at the bottom, it means your radiator needs bleeding. 

Ask to move to a smart meter 

This will allow you to keep track of your energy usage and learn which appliances are draining more of your electricity. Contact your energy provider and they should be able to install one into your home free of charge.  

Draught proofing

You will be surprised how much heat can leak out of your home through draughts around your doors and windows. From getting a cheap draught excluder for the bottom of your doors, to sealing up any cracks to the outside, all this will help keep your home warm.

Add loft insulation

Heat rises through your house and, if it’s not properly insulated, can escape through the roof. While this may be expensive in the short term, in the long term it will save you a significant amount on your energy bills.
